Safe Picked is run by Jacob Musselman, who got tired of safe roundups that lump $50 biometric pistol boxes together with $2,000 fireproof gun safes as if they protect the same thing. This site started as a personal shopping comparison and grew into something public because the buyer-side data was more useful than what kept coming up in search.
It is a one-person operation. No outsourced writers, no sponsored "editorial picks," no fictional team. Just one person reading thousands of verified-purchase Amazon reviews, cross-checking fire ratings and lock-mechanism specs, and keeping the comparison tables honest.
Our Mission
Safes are a category where buyer regret happens fast. A safe that fails to unlock when you need it, a fire-rating claim that doesn't hold up, or a fingerprint sensor that stops working after 18 months can cost you the contents and the safe itself. Safe Picked focuses on the factors that actually determine reliability over a multi-year ownership window: lock mechanism redundancy, fire-rating certifications, anchor-bolt strength, and how the safe holds up in real owner reviews after the warranty period.
How We Research
Every comparison is built from publicly available information. Specs come directly from manufacturer product pages and from UL or ETL certification listings where applicable. Prices and stock status come from Amazon, verified each week via an automated Playwright script that loads the live product page and reads the buybox. Owner feedback is pulled from verified-purchase Amazon reviews and active subreddits like /r/CCW, /r/guns, /r/preppers, and /r/homedefense. If owner consensus disagrees with the manufacturer's claims, the article flags it.
California Department of Justice (DOJ) Firearms Safety Certificate compliance gets explicit attention. California residents have specific legal storage requirements, and a safe that fails DOJ certification cannot legally be used as the primary storage device for a handgun in California. Safe Picked flags this on a per-product basis.
What We Don't Do
No brand pays for placement on this site. No sponsored content is disguised as comparisons. Affiliate links help fund the site but never change how products are ranked. The commission is the same regardless of which safe you buy.
We do not own or test the safes covered. Our recommendations are aggregated from manufacturer specifications, certification listings, and verified buyer reviews, not first-person testing. We will never claim "we tested" something we did not test.
